Juneteenth Celebration volunteers to sponsor art and mentor program

The Juneteenth Celebration Association is again sponsoring its free, fine arts and mentoring program for young people.
The second series of five art workshops for grades six through 12 will begin Feb. 20 at Curtin Middle School.
The workshops take place this month, March 20, April 17, May 15 and June 12. Completed projects will be showcased at the art exhibit on June 19 as part of the 11th annual Juneteenth Celebration event.
New to the program will be brief educational and mentoring presentations. Slated to speak to the children is the Rev. Marwin Clay Reeves, a specialty program treatment specialist at Federal Penitentiary, Lewisburg.
He has worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons for 12 years. Reeves has been a juvenile case manager with Bethesda Treatment Center and a campus police officer at Bucknell University, Lewisburg.
He is an ordained pastor at Christ Community Worship Center and is pursuing a master of divinity and pastoral counseling degree at Liberty University.
Also speaking will be Dr. Amy Golahny, art history professor at Lycoming College. Golahny is recognized internationally as a Rembrandt expert.
She has published three books and written more than 40 articles on Dutch art, contemporary artists and art in Williamsport. Her research has been funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, The National Gallery and the DAAD of Germany.
She has been curator of various exhibitions, including the most recent Stained Glass Windows of Williamsport at the Thomas T. Taber Museum and she has worked at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Among others, volunteers include interns from Lycoming College; Anthony Phillips, teaching assistant at Roosevelt Middle School; Jackie Thomas, fibers artist and former assistant superintendent for Williamsport Area School District; and Seth Goodman, art professor at Lycoming College.
Field trips also are planned. The art sessions are from noon until 3:30 p.m. and instruction will include ceramics using the potter’s wheel and kiln, oil painting and fibers work.
