Dr. Mamie Sweeting-Diggs was presented with a plaque by emcee Kevin D. Watson for her contribution to Williamsport’s black history and the local Underground Railroad Exhibit. It was signed by Conni Robinson, the Juneteenth Celebration Association Administrator and Mike Ruby, Store Manager of Wegman’s Food and Pharmacy of Williamsport. Wegman’s held a black history program in 1997 at which Dr. Diggs presented her Undergound Railroad Exhibit. (click above to view the artwork for the plaque)

Julia Collins Marker replica unveiling
After Mitch Kachun’s talk on Julia B. Collins, the marker replication was unveiled by Richard James and Conni Robinson. Conni read the marker’s wording, chosen by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission; and Mary Sieminski added comments. Click on the above URL to listen to WPSU’s Emily Reddy interviewing Sieminski, Kachun, Robinson and Jane Luther, a probable descendant of Collins.

Earlier in the program, a Proclamation was presented by the State Representative of the 83rd. Assemblyman Richard Mirabito and his Administrative Aide, Tonya Anderson read the document to Robinson and (off stage) board members, Richard Karp and John Blair. Kevin Watson read a Certificate of Appreciation written by Congressman Chris Carney of the 10th Congressional District.

Katie Benson’s School of Dance presented great modern dance choreography and costumes. Expressions did their rendition of MJs Thriller, and Heaven Sent moved the audience to clap with inspiration.

Guests enjoyed the farm animals and vendors. Adults and children had their faces painted by the CC Clowns, played games and viewed the Gifted Youth Art Exhibit.

Photos may be viewed through this website on Richard Karp’s link or on www.Rikkisan.com. Next year’s event will be on June 18, 2011. Keep checking for details.
